Ian McCartney

Ian McCartney was born in 1951 and educated at state schools. Before entering Parliament he was Secretary to Roger Stott MP and was a Wigan Borough Councillor from 1982-1987.

He was elected MP for Makerfield in the 1987 General Election. He served as Opposition Spokesperson for the NHS from 1992-1994, Employment from 1994-1996 and Education and Employment from 1996-1997.

He was Minister of State for the DTI between 1997-1999, The Cabinet Office from 1999-2001 and the DWP from 2001-2003.

He was appointed the Minister without Portfolio and Party Chair in 2003, a position that he held until 2006.

After the cabinet reshuffle of May 2006, McCartney was appointed Minister for Trade in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for Trade and Industry, a position that attends the Cabinet.

He is married to Ann and has one deceased son and two daughters.
