There is continuing coverage of the Iran nuclear talks in Lausanne, with the morning press taking a somewhat pessimistic tone. The Guardian, Independent, Times, Daily Mail, Evening Standard, and Sun cover the story in their print editions, with the BBC and Telegraph also carrying updates online. Lacking clear details or a concrete deal to report on, the Independent focuses on the shared concerns between Israel and Sunni Arab states such as Saudi Arabia at the possible deal – a theme also picked up by the Guardian online – and the Independent also has an editorial which points to the clashes of agendas likely to persist between the US and Iran regardless of whether a deal is signed. Meanwhile, the Times reports criticism of the US negotiating position from former Obama administration official Mark Dubowitz, considered the architect of the sanctions regime. The Guardian’s Julian Borger resorts to writing about the politician themed pizza options being served up to journalists in a pizzeria a few doors down from the conference hotel where the negotiations are taking place.

There is also some coverage of the further conviction for former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert for bribery, handed down yesterday by an Israeli court, with the story covered by the Daily Mail, Evenening Standard and Metro, and by the BBC online.

Meanwhile the FT has a report on 2014 being the highest year for civilian fatalities in the Palestinian territories since 1967.

The Israeli media is dominated by the further conviction handed down to former PM Olmert in the Talansky affair, which reverses a previous acquittal on the charges, and adds to the series of convictions for which Olmert has already been sentenced. The story dominates the front pages of all the morning papers. Comentator Ben Dror Yemini, writing in Yediot Ahronot, reflects on the fact that whilst Israel has a poor record when it comes to politicians breaking the law, it has an impressive record with respect to its judicial system prosecuting them. In most cases the Olmert story shares space with speculation and anticipation relating to the Iranian nuclear talks in Lausanne.

The Israeli media is also focusing on the condition of the children of foreign workers and asylum seekers being cared for in makeshift kindergartens, after a series of child deaths in recent weeks. The story was covered in the broadcast media and features on the front pages of Haaretz and Yediot Ahronot.

The media also covers demonstrations that took place in the West Bank and on the Gaza border surrounding Land Day, a day of Palestinian protest against Israel, but reports that demonstrations were of relatively small scale, and Haaretz reports that there was none of the disruption inside Israel that has been seen in previous years.

Meanwhile Maariv also reserves front page space to the story that the Israeli actor Topol, famous for portraying the milkman Teviah in Fidler on the Roof, will receive the prestigious Israel Prize.
