A number of MPs, Union leaders and British academics have penned a letter published in today’s Guardian in which call on Prime Minister Cameron to ban Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu from the UK ahead of his upcoming visit this week. Referring to the Gaza Strip as “the hell that Israel has created”, the signatories call on the British Prime Minister to impose sanctions on Israel until it “ends the blockade and the occupation”.

Prime Minister Cameron has told the House of Commons that the British military has targeted a Briton in Syria who was plotting to assassinate the Queen. According to the major newspapers, including the Telegraph, the Times, the Guardian and the Independent, an RAF drone killed Reyaad Khan last month in what was the first such killing carried out by the UK. The Prime Minister called it an act of “self-defence”, which was grounded in a “clear legal basis”. The paper also reported that the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Syrian monitoring group, asserted that ISIS has now seized the last major oil field that Bashar al-Assad’s government controlled. No other information was provided.

The BBC reported yesterday that French President Francois Hollande has ordered that his military prepare for air strikes against the Islamic State, in what would mark a significant policy shift by the French leadership. In other news on Syria, the Guardian reports this morning that German intelligence has confirmed that Islamic State used mustard gas in northern Iraq late last month. The head of Germany’s foreign intelligence agency, the BND, confirmed this to the German daily Bild.

The Telegraph, the Financial Times and the Independent have reported on the death of the Reham Dawabshe (27), the mother of Ali Dawabshe who was burned in a terrorist attack by Jewish extremists on 30 July. She died as a result of burns she suffered during the attack. Her husband, Saad, also succumbed to the wounds he sustained in the fire and passed away a week after the fire. The only survivor is Ahmad, age four, who remains in hospital with severe burns. The perpetrators have yet to be apprehended.

Despite reaching a deal with the West about its nuclear programme, Iran is showing no signs of moderating its anti-American rhetoric. The Times reports this morning that a plaque was unveiled at the weekend outside the grounds of the old US embassy in Tehran and on it are listed 100 official terms of abuse for America. The paper writes that these include “Great Satan,” “pharaoh of our times,” “source of all calamities,” “criminal of history” and “tyrannical demon”. The ceremony included the burning and trampling of American, British and Israeli flags. “The Iranian nation still considers America its main enemy,” officials told reporters.

The Israeli government approved the natural gas arrangement in the Knesset yesterday, and has been covered widely throughout the Israeli media. The vote passed with a 59-51 majority, clearing the first hurdle on the way to taking hold. However, the formal opposition of the Antitrust Authority director to the arrangement still needs to be overcome and Economy Minister Aryeh Deri’s reluctance to approve the arrangement will require political manoeuvring on the Prime Minister’s part.

Israeli Radio reports this morning that several firebombs were thrown at a house on Meir Nakar Street in the Armon Hanatziv neighbourhood of Jerusalem. No one was injured but a fire broke out at the house.

Haaretz is reporting on the aforementioned letter, published in the Guardian, by British union leaders and politicians calling to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu upon his arrival to the UK later this week.

Former Mossad chief Meir Dagan chastised Prime Minister Netanyahu yesterday at international conference on terrorism yesterday. Haaretz reports that Dagan criticised Prime Minister Netanyahu’s “strategic decision” to confront the US over how to stop Iran’s nuclear programme. The problem is Iran, not President Obama”, said Dagan.

Maariv reports that the Executive Committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation has postponed the National Council’s gathering, which was scheduled for 14 September. It was rumoured that Palestinian President Abbas was planning to use the gathering to promote confidants within the PLO to key leadership positions. A new time for the gathering was not scheduled. NRG reported yesterday that Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, is scheduled to arrive in Israel today. He will meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Rivlin and also travel to Ramallah to meet with President Abbas. These meetings take place with the backdrop of EU discussions to label Israeli products that are made in the West Bank.

An Israeli who travelled to Yemen to visit his brother, whom he had not seen since 1995, has been missing for three months. According to Walla, it is feared that the 65-year old man was kidnapped. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not comment on the story.
