Bloody day of terror in Israel after stabbing spree

[ssba]

The Times, Independent, Guardian, Telegraph and Independent i all cover a bloody day of terror attacks in Israel yesterday, as one person was killed and at least 11 injured in three separate attacks. In the most serious incident, a 21-year-old Palestinian went on a stabbing spree in Jaffa, a mixed Jewish and Arab area. A 29-year-old American tourist was killed. Earlier in the day, an Israeli man was stabbed in the central city of Petach Tikva, but managed to turn the knife on his attacker. And in Jerusalem, a Palestinian opened fire on two border guards near the Old City, seriously wounding one of them. Yesterday’s incidents, the latest in near-daily attacks which have killed at least 31 Israelis since the start of October, came as US Vice President Joe Biden arrived in Israel on an official visit.

The Independent i and the online editions of the Independent and Financial Times all cover a poll by the Washington-based think tank Pew Research Center, on a whole range of attitudes in Israel and among US Jews. All reports focus on the finding which indicates that 48 per cent of Jewish Israelis agree that Arabs should be expelled or transferred. However, a Pew researcher emphasises in the Financial Times online that the question on this issue was vaguely worded. Meanwhile, in the Independent i, Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin is quoted describing the poll as a “wake-up call for Israeli society.”

The Times and Independent i both report that two suspected spies for Israel’s Mossad agency unwittingly had their cover blown in Germany, when their vehicle had to be rescued after becoming stuck in mud. They were apparently monitoring the delivery of a German-made submarine to Israel.

The Telegraph, Independent, Metro, Independent i and the online edition of the Guardian all report that Iran yesterday tested ballistic missiles, in defiance of United Nations (UN) Security Council resolutions. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said that the tests demonstrated Tehran’s “deterrent power.” Meanwhile, the Financial Times reports that Business Secretary Sajid Javid will soon lead the UK’s largest ever trade mission to Iran.

The online editions of the Guardian, Independent and Telegraph all report that the United States says that its air strikes in Syria have targeted what they described as an “ISIS war minister,” although it is not clear if the senior terror leader was killed.

The Israeli press focus on yesterday’s terror attacks, with several critical of the government’s handling of current security situation. Writing in Yedioth Ahronoth, Nahum Barnea states that, “The government must take its head out of the sand, stop looking for someone to blame and get down to work. It’‎s hard but not impossible” while Alex Fishman argues that, “Yesterday’‎s events are further proof that Mr. Security, Benjamin Netanyahu, has no military idea, no diplomatic idea, and no magic cure to the terrorist offensive that has been going on for the past six months.” ‎In Israeli daily Maariv, Ben Caspit explains the difficulty in preventing Palestinian terror attacks saying that, “‎There is no magic solution, no formula, no victory picture for the situation we are in. The truth is that this is a popular, spontaneous, improvised, civilian Intifada. Its only rule is that it has no rules… ‎ Nothing is planned. This is viral Intifada, and the person hasn’t yet been born who knows how to stop such a phenomenon… ‎ this is the reality of our lives.”

In other news, a General Security Services operative was killed last night in operational activity in the Gaza perimeter, with the circumstances of the incident being examined.
