Arrest fears shorten Israeli dignitaries’ UK visits

[ssba]

In the UK and international press, the Independent notes that Israeli and Turkish officials are working together to reach a mutual agreement to improve bilateral relations before the UN releases a report on the Gaza bound flotilla raid last May. BBC Online and the Independent note that Hamas is enforcing a strict code of Islam in Gaza and have arrested a male hairdresser for cutting women’s’ hair. BBC Online also reports that Israeli officials are boycotting a UN official in Lebanon after he wrote a report criticising Israel over its response to demonstrations on the border and attempted incursions in May.

In the Israeli press, Haaretz reports that Israeli police are deployed at Ben Gurion Airport and are prepared for the arrival of hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters who are flying-in from all over Europe. The paper also notes that retired IDF Maj.-Gen. Danny Rothschild cut a trip short to the UK over warnings from the Israeli embassy that an arrest warrant may be issued against him. Ynetnews notes that former-defence minister Amir Peretz also cut a trip to the UK short this past weekend over arrest warrant threats. The Jerusalem Post notes that reconciliation efforts between Hamas and Fatah have been put on hold. The paper also notes that a UN report into the Palestinian Nakba Day demonstrations along the Israel-Lebanon border in May said that Israel used force “not commensurate to the threat” and that protesters also behaved in a provocative and violent way.
