Clinton backs Iran protests

The renewed unrest in Iran dominates Middle East related coverage in the UK media today. All papers and news outlets have coverage of the protests. In other items, the Guardian, Metro London, Daily Telegraph, Independent and Financial Times review a documentary about children in the Gaza Strip during Operation Cast Lead. The Guardian has a series of articles about prospects for change elsewhere in the Arab world, with pieces on Jordan and Egypt. The Guardian also reviews a new play about the Hebron massacre of 1994. The Daily Telegraph notes promises by the Egyptian authorities of elections within six months. The Financial Times notes the Egyptian military’s reported opposition to a future political role for Mohammed el-Baradei in Egyptian politics. Reuters and the Scotsman have pieces arguing that the uprising in Egypt represented a blow to al-Qaeda. BBC Online quotes US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s words of support for protestors in Iran. BBC Online also looks into Israel’s view of the unrest in the Middle East and asks if a ‘domino effect’ is taking place. BBC Online, the Times and the Independent also note the resignation of the Palestinian Cabinet. Sky News Online, meanwhile, reports that a constitutional referendum is set to take place in Egypt within two months. The Evening Standard notes plans by demonstrators at the London School of Economics to protest against a German banker because of derogatory remarks he made about Muslims and Jews. The Times notes that Syria has jailed a 19 year old blogger for five years for ‘revealing information to a foreign country’ on her blogs. 

In the Israeli media, Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post report on the first public appearance by Gabi Ashkenazi as a civilian, in which he sounded a note of caution regarding the current ‘tectonic shift’ in the region, as he described it. All papers also cover the clashes in Iran. Haaretz notes that Egypt’s military is considering a constitutional referendum within two months. The Jerusalem Post, meanwhile, reports on remarks made by US Chief of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen on the strategic relationship between the US and Israel. Ynetnews and Maariv note that the Knesset yesterday passed the ‘Bishara bill’ which will deprive the former MK, who fled the country after being accused of espionage on behalf of Hezbollah, from his right to receive a pension from the Knesset. Ynetnews also reports on anger in Jordan against Queen Rania, who is accused of favouritism toward Jordanians of Palestinian descent and extravagant use of public funds.
