Clinton says US is preparing new initiative for Israeli-Palestinian peace

The Guardian today reports that Syrian soldiers have been shot for refusing to fire on protestors. The Times speaks to Quartet Middle East Envoy Tony Blair, who is set to present a report in Brussels on Palestinian institution-building. The paper notes Blair’s estimation that the PA appears ‘well positioned’ to establish a state in the near future. The Times has an additional piece looking into the issue of a unilateral declaration of statehood by the Palestinians. BBC Online note a UN estimate that the PA is ‘largely ready to govern.’  BBC Online also reports on pop star Justin Bieber’s frustration during a trip to Israel because of aggressive photographers. The Daily Telegraph, Sun, Reuters, BBC Online and Sky News Online note that former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has suffered a heart attack. The Independent has a piece on a mansion owned by a Palestinian businessman in the town of Beit Jala, which suffered damage during the Second Intifada. The Financial Times and Reuters have additional pieces on the unrest in Syria. The Daily Mail quotes Helen Boaden, BBC director of news, who described the corporation’s past coverage of the Arab-Israeli conflict as “ignorant”. The Guardian notes a Columbia University study of more than 1,000 judicial rulings by Israeli judges presiding over parole hearings in 2009. The Daily Telegraph has a piece noting a claim by a documentary film maker to have found the nails with which Jesus was crucified.

In the Israeli media, all papers report a statement by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announcing new US efforts on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. All papers note the heart attack suffered by Hosni Mubarak. Haaretz notes the detention of Hosni Mubarak’s sons in Egypt as part of an investigation into corruption, and the difficulties of the Israeli Attorney-General’s office in finalising an indictment of Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. The Jerusalem Post has an analysis piece on Iran and the current regional unrest. Ynetnews notes Israeli efforts to persuade Turkey to stop a new flotilla to Gaza. Maariv is reporting that an order for the detention of Mubarak for a 15 day period has been issued.
