Huge Jerusalem gay pride goes ahead amidst tight security

[ssba]

The Guardian reports that yesterday’s gay pride parade went ahead in Jerusalem under tight security. Over 25,000 people are reported to have attended the event, which has often proven to be a point of tension due to the opposition of some among the city’s religious public. The report says that Yishai Schlissel, an ultra-Orthodox extremist who is currently in prison after he stabbed and murdered a 16-year-old girl at last year’s event, was arrested this week for plotting to have his brother attack participants at yesterday’s march.

The i includes a picture of Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin, former-President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu experimenting with virtual glasses at a ceremony yesterday to mark the construction of the Israel Innovation Centre. The new museum will tell the story of Israeli innovation and the shaping of the “start-up nation”. The attraction is set to open in 2018 and will be housed at the Peres Centre for Peace in Jaffa.

Meanwhile, the Independent online reports that US-led air strikes against ISIS in northern Syria this week have killed at least 77 civilians. It has apparently prompted calls from some Syrian opposition leaders for the United States to end its’ air strikes.

In the Israeli media, the top story in Yediot Ahronot, also covered prominently in Maariv, Haaretz and Israel Hayom is the news that Brig. Gen. Ofek Buchris has been charged with rape and a number of other sex offences against an officer and a soldier under his command. Israel Radio news reports that Buchris spoke to reporters yesterday outside his home in Mitzpe Netofa and protested his innocence, saying that the truth would come to light in court.

Jerusalem’s gay pride parade is the top story in Haaretz and is also a major item in Israel Hayom, Maariv and Yediot Ahronot, which reports that yesterday’s large attendance was in part in protest at derogatory comments about homosexuality made recently by prominent Orthodox Rabbi Yigal Levinstein. Israel Radio news says that the parents of Shira Banki, the 16-year-old murdered at last year’s event, called on the public not to allow hatred, ignorance, and primitive views to dominate public discourse.

The top story in Maariv is the news that Yisrael Beitenu leader, Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman has joined criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to postpone the opening of a new public broadcasting corporation. Netanyahu, who is also acting Communications Minister and Histadrut workers’ union chief Avi Nissenkoen announced the postponement earlier this week. Coalition partners, Kulanu head and Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon and Jewish Home leader and Education Minister Naftali Bennett have already expressed their opposition to the decision. Kahlon said that the postponement would have a significant financial impact, while Bennett intimated that Netanyahu was attempting to wield further control over the media.

Meanwhile, the top story on the front page of Israel Hayom, is a meeting between the publication’s correspondent and Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump at the party convention. Trump declared: “I love Israel.”
