IDF deploys additional troops in West Bank following Itamar family massacre

In the UK and international papers today, most papers report on the terrorist attack where five members of a Jewish family were stabbed to death on Friday night in the settlement of Itamar in the northern West Bank. Several papers note Israel’s decision to build additional housing units in existing settlements in the West Bank in response to the terrorist attack. The Times carries a piece on the funerals that took place on Sunday of the five family members who were murdered. Over the weekend, the Guardian on Sunday noted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on the international community to condemn the killings of five Jewish family members from the settlement of Itamar. The Financial Times yesterday noted that the army started a manhunt and arrested suspects to find the perpetrators of Friday’s attack in Itamar.

In the Israeli press, Haaretz reports that the IDF have deployed additional troops to the West Bank to prevent an increase in violence following the terrorist attack on Friday night where five family members from the settlement of Itamar were murdered. The papers note that Palestinian Authority officials denounced the terrorist attack and condemned Israel’s decision to build further housing units in the West Bank. Kol Israel reports that PA President Mahmoud Abbas in an interview called the attack a “despicable and immoral” act. In other news, most papers report that Defence Minister Ehud Barak in a speech yesterday said that a “political tsunami” will take place in Israel if progress is not made in the peace process. The Jerusalem Post notes that Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias arrived in Israel last night marking the first state visit by a Cypriot head in eleven years.
