All the Israeli media report the government decision last night to quarantine Israelis returning from overseas. The decision was taken on the advice of the Health Ministry and after a protracted cabinet discussion regarding the Coronavirus outbreak, which ultimately settled on the 14-day self-quarantine option beginning yesterday evening (for Israelis) and on Thursday (for foreigners entering Israel who can show they have a place to quarantine). A health ministry official said: “We’re taking this step to maintain our ability to keep a relatively low number of infected people relative to other countries. If we fail to protect public health, we’re going to reach a situation of the kind that exists in Italy.” Analysts speculated that the move would effectively halt all travel into and out of Israel – although the national airline El Al said it would continue flights on an emergency basis. The number of Israelis infected by the Coronavirus has risen to over 50.

Channel 13 news reported last night that the decision to quarantine returnees from all countries was taken by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to avoid singling out the United States and, in particular, the Trump Administration’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak. According to the report, US Vice President Mike Pence spoke to Netanyahu and called for him to “go global”.

The Palestinian media report that the number of Coronavirus cases in the Palestinian Authority has increased to 26. As of late last week there were no known cases in the PA. Most worrying was a reported case in Tulkarem, in the northern West Bank, which was the first outside of the Bethlehem district. The PA has declared a state of emergency, with Bethlehem remaining in lockdown. The Israeli military announced that it would not yet be implementing a full closure around the West Bank. The PA, in consultation with Israel and Jordan, was set to stop all transit via the Allenby Border crossing that connects the West Bank with Jordan.
