Netanyahu to present new peace initiative

The Independent notes that due to international pressure and lack of progress on peace talks, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is planning to deliver a policy speech in the upcoming weeks calling for a new direction for the peace process. In other news, the Times and Reuters  report that Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq resigned yesterday after further protests and political pressure was placed on the new Egyptian government. The papers also continue to report on the unrest across the Middle East and in Northern Africa. BBC Online notes that the Tunisian interim president Fouad Mebazaa announced that new elections will be held on 24 July. The Economist notes that a civil war is beckoning in Libya as rebel fighters clash with troops loyal to Col. Moammar Gaddafi.

In the Israeli press, Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post report that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans in the coming weeks to present a new policy speech on the peace process. The Jerusalem Post notes that UK Prime Minister David Cameron said yesterday that his support for Israel is “indestructible”. The paper also notes that the Central Bureau of Statistics reported that there was a 72% decline in new house construction in the West Bank in 2010. In Palestinian politics, Haaretz notes that Fatah officials are calling for PA President Mahmoud Abbas to fire Prime Minister Salaam Fayyad. Ynetnews reports that Abbas said yesterday that he would not accept a peace proposal that included a Palestinian state with provisional borders.
