Palestinian Authority stops paying for Israeli electricity supply to Gaza

The Times reports that a senior IDF official has disclosed that Israel destroyed nearly 100 Syrian missiles in a raid on a missile store near Palmyra in March this year, many of which were bound for Hezbollah.

The Times reports that Liberal Democrat Leader Tim Farron has blocked former MP David Ward from standing in the general election as a result of his antisemitic comments. The Guardian notes that Farron called Ward’s remarks “deeply offensive, wrong and antisemitic”.

The i notes Ward’s prior suspension in 2013, and 2014 comments that suggested he would be ready to fire rockets from Gaza into Israel.

The BBC reports that the Charity Commission is investigating a number of University Student Unions for adopting policies to boycott Israel as a potential violation of their charitable status. Jewish students have expressed concern that support for boycotts has fueled an increase in antisemitism on campuses.

All the Israeli media have reported that the Prime Minister’s Office and the White House are in the advanced stages of planning for a visit by President Trump at the end of May.

The Times of Israel reports on an attempted stabbing attack in Hawara in the West Bank. The initial investigation revealed that the Palestinian assailant is a relative of another Palestinian who tried to stab Israeli soldiers in the same area the day before.

Haaretz reports that the Palestinian Authority has told Israel that it will immediately stop paying for the Israeli electricity supply to Gaza, a move expected to deepen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Jerusalem Post quotes a senior IDF officer warning that shortages in Gaza might lead to a confrontation between Israel and Hamas.

Maariv reports that the National Cyber Defence Authority foiled a major cyber-attack that targeted 120 private and public institutions in Israel.

Israel Radio reports that after more than 11 hours of debate, the Knesset postponed by two weeks the planned closure of the Israel Broadcasting Authority and launch of the new public broadcasting corporation.  The new launch date is May 15. Next week a motion will be introduced to postpone the transition by an additional two weeks until June 1.
