Five people were injured in a terrorist attack in northern Jerusalem on Friday morning. The perpetrator has since been shot and detained by security officials.

According to Israeli news site Ynet, the attacker, believed to be a Palestinian man from East Jerusalem, rammed his car into a group of police officers, injuring four of them. He then continued to a nearby light-railway station where he hit a cyclist.

The attacker was detained by Border Police who were present at the scene, and was not seriously wounded, according to reports.  A large meat cleaver was found on his body after the attack, which he reportedly attempted to use after crashing his car.

The attack took place near an Israeli Border Police base, where a similar attack took place on 5 November 2014, which killed one border police officer and injured 13 people.

Responding to the incident, Israel Police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld tweeted, “Heightened security continues in Jerusalem after terror attack this morning. Suspect shot by security officer … Police forensics examining scene attack in Jerusalem. Terrorist was shot and arrested after driving into 5 people.”
