One dead, several seriously injured in terror attacks in three Israeli cities

In breaking news this morning (Wednsday), police reported that one Israeli man was critically wounded when two Palestinian terrorists opened fire from a vehicle at a light rail stop near the New Gate of Jerusalem’s Old City. That event was preceded an hour earlier by a shooting attack at a bus stop in Jerusalem’s Ramot neighbourhood. Yesterday evening one person was killed and at least five others were reported to have been seriously wounded after a Palestinian knife attacker stabbed ten people in Jaffa. It was the third attack of the day, after a man was stabbed in Petach Tikva and two Border Police officers seriously wounded in a Jerusalem shooting.

The Jaffa attack on Tuesday evening took place yesterday evening and began when a 22-year-old Palestinian man from Kalkilya in the West Bank began stabbing people in the popular Jaffa Port, which is filled with restaurants and cafes. He killed a 29-year-old American tourist and seriously injured his wife. The attacker moved on to Jaffa’s central Clock Tower Square, stabbing three more people and then continued northwards along the promenade towards Tel Aviv, stabbing four more.

One of the injured is a pregnant woman, while an Arab Israeli and a Palestinian were also wounded in the stabbing spree, which lasted around 20 minutes. Jaffa is a mixed area, home to both Jewish and Arab Israelis. The attacker was eventually shot dead by police. Meanwhile, the wounded were transported to two local hospitals. The attack took place less than a mile away from where American Vice President Joe Biden and former Israeli President Shimon Peres were meeting.

Earlier in the day, an Israeli man was injured in a busy street in the central city of Petach Tikvah. He was followed into a shop by a Palestinian man, who plunged a knife into his neck. Remarkably, the victim is said to have removed the knife before turning it on the attacker and killing him.

At around the same time, two Border Police officers came under fire on Salah a-Din Street, near the Damascus Gate of Jerusalem’s Old City. Shots were fired from a motorcycle, hitting one of the officers in the head, who is in critical condition. During the subsequent firefight, the other officer was wounded while the attacker was shot dead.

Yesterday’s incidents are the latest in near-daily attacks launched by Palestinians, which have killed at least 31 Israelis since the start of October.
