Airbnb suspends delisting of West Bank homes

Airbnb announced yesterday that it was suspending implementation of its previous decision to delist properties in Israeli settlements as it continues discussions with the Israeli Government and other stakeholders.

Following a meeting between Israeli Tourism Minister, Yariv Levin, and Airbnb Vice President, Chris Lehane, Levin said: “Airbnb’s announcement that the decision not to advertise vacation apartments in Judea and Samaria will not be implemented is an important step in the right direction.” He added that he would continue “to act to ensure that all Israeli citizens receive equal treatment”.

Airbnb later released a statement in Hebrew saying: “The company will not be implementing its policy in practice” and it will “continue its dialogue with the Israeli government”.

Airbnb later issued a statement in English that said: “The reports issued earlier today are inaccurate. Airbnb expressed its unequivocal rejection of the boycott movement and communicated its commitment to develop its business in Israel, enabling more tourists from around the world to enjoy the wonders of this country and its people.”

The statement continued: “We are here to meet with a variety of stakeholders and as a result of our meetings have an even deeper understanding that this is an incredibly complex and emotional issue.” They added that: “Airbnb communicated that we are developing the tools needed to implement our policy and that process includes continuing our dialogue with the Government of Israel and other stakeholders.”

Although Airbnb announced on 19 November that it would remove listings of homes in Israeli settlements from its website, it had not yet taken steps to implement that decision.
