Arab League pays respects to protesters killed across Arab world

[ssba]

Arab ministers of the Arab League yesterday paid their respects by standing in silence to commemorate the protesters that were killed in the recent uprisings talking place against governments across the region. “The Arab nation has triumphed over itself,” Secretary-General Amr Moussa said. “While I must mourn the lives of the martyrs in Egypt and Tunisia, I must salute all revolutions seeking freedom and peace.” Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who used to serve in Mubarak’s government, said the uprising in Egypt was the “most spectacular in history”.

The last time the Arab League met was when Tunisia’s leader Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali was toppled by public protests. This Tunisian protest subsequently triggered protests across the region including, Bahrain, Egypt and now the bloody protests taking place in Libya against Col. Muammar Gaddafi rule. Libya’s seat at the Arab League was empty and the country has been suspended from activities due to manner in which Gaddafi is handling the protests. During the meeting, the Arab League called on Gaddafi’s government to halt attacks against Libyans and said it would consider imposing a no-fly zone over the country.
