Attorney-General nearing Lieberman indictment

[ssba]

Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein and senior officials in Israel’s State Prosecutor’s Office began a marathon three day deliberation in Jerusalem yesterday, in which they intend to reach a decision regarding whether to issue an indictment against Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. The team are to consider the likelihood of obtaining a conviction on the various possible charges against Lieberman. According to a report in Haaretz today, some of the senior prosecutors involved have identified particular obstacles blocking the probability of a conviction on a charge of bribery. As a result, according to the report, they prefer to focus on charges of fraud, breach of trust and money laundering. A final decision is expected in late February. Police believe that Lieberman and his associates pocketed around NIS 10 million, transferred via foreign companies. The foreign minister dismisses the charges, which he claims are politically motivated.
