16-year-old Daniel Viflic, who was critically wounded by an anti-tank missile shot at a school bus from Gaza into southern Israel last month, died from his wounds on Sunday. Viflic’s condition deteriorated last week and he died at the Soroka Medical Centre in Beer Sheva yesterday. Professor Shaul Sofer, the director of the intensive care unit at the Soroka Medical Centre said, “Daniel arrived in critical condition and shortly afterward his brain stopped functioning. Due to the sensitive nature of the event, we continued treatments despite knowing that he had no chance of recovery.”

The anti-tank missile hit the school bus near Kibbutz Sa’ad a few minutes after it had dropped off the school children. Viflic and the bus driver suffered from shrapnel wounds from the strike. Following the bus attack, an escalation in cross-border attacks took place including the firing of dozens of rockets into Israel and retaliatory strikes by the Israeli air force on targets in Gaza.
