Galant affair: State Comptroller rules out malice

[ssba]

Israeli State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss yesterday handed in to Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein his report on the allegations of improper land use which have overshadowed the succession of Major-General Yoav Galant to the position of IDF Chief of Staff. In the report, Lindenstrauss was critical of the actions of Galant. Lindenstrauss was asked to investigate allegations that Galant illegally seized public lands next to his home in Moshav Amikam. In his report, the State Comptroller found discrepancies between testimony that Galant gave in court, and details that were later uncovered. However, he found that while Galant had withheld details, he had not done so with malice. Weinstein must now rule as to whether he continues to support Galant’s appointment as IDF Chief of Staff. If he decides to continue his support, it is unlikely that further obstacles will be placed in Galant’s way, despite a recent petition filed with the High Court of Justice in an attempt to block his appointment.
