Hamas attacks media outlets in Gaza

[ssba]

Earlier this week, Armed men claiming to represent the Hamas internal security forces in Gaza have entered the offices of a number of international media organisations in Gaza, threatening employees and destroying equipment. The Gaza offices of Reuters, CNN and the Japanese station NHK have been targeted. The group of ten men, reportedly armed with pistols, refused to show documents. According to a Reuters report, the offices of the agency were entered after a reporter was spotted filming a protest demonstration from the building. An Associated Press journalist was also detained by the authorities after filming a protest demanding Palestinian reconciliation. The Foreign Press Association, which represents foreign journalists in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, condemned the crackdown, saying that these events were ‘the latest in a string of chilling attacks on reporters in Gaza.’ Hamas authorities have denied any connection with the group who entered the Reuters building, claiming they belonged to an unidentified ‘youth group’.
