Iran fires missiles at ISIS base in Syria

Iran has reportedly fired a surface-to-surface missile into Eastern Syria, claiming it was retaliating the terror attack in Tehran in which 12 people were killed.

Iranian news agency Tasnim has said the Shahab-3 medium-range ballistic missile – used for the first time since the Iraq-Iran war 30 years ago – was aimed towards Syria’s Deir el-Zour province at the bases of groups Iran holds responsible for terror attacks in Teheran.

An Iranian Revolutionary Guards statement said that “the spilling of any pure blood will not go unanswered”.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the Tehran attack on June 7 via its news agency Amaq, in which it published a video of the five alleged assailants.

The terrorist group said: “This is a message from your brothers, from the people of Jihad. We urge Muslims to undermine the security of the heretical Shi’ites in Iran. Know that the necks of the heretical Shi’ites in Iran are not far from the sword of the soldiers of the Islamic state with the help of Allah.”

Iran is heavily supporting Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad and his army, and finances dozens of Shia militias fighting on behalf of the regime in the Syrian civil war.

In related Syria news, confrontation between the Syrian regime and the US-led coalition escalated on Sunday after the US-led coalition shot down a Syrian military jet over the town of Ja’Din, which is held by US-supported Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and lies on the outskirts of al-Raqqa.

The Syrian army said its warplane was on a mission against ISIS targets and that the downing would have “dangerous repercussions” on efforts to fight terrorism. The US said that it acted in self-defence after the Syrian regime dropped bombs near SDF fighters, who are leading a major offensive to capture al-Raqqa from ISIS.
