Israel blamed for air strike on Syrian arms depot

The Israeli air force reportedly bombed an arms depot near Damascus on Saturday night.

According to Syrian state media agency, SANA, citing a military source, Syrian air defences responded to what they called an “Israeli missile attack” on Damascus airport and shot down several missiles. Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told the Associated Press: “The missiles, suspected to be Israeli, destroyed an arms warehouse near the Damascus international airport.”

The attack reportedly targeted an Iranian aircraft that was delivering weapons to pro-regime forces, Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) units and Hezbollah units. No causalities were reported.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have not commented on the accusations. Yesterday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “Israel is constantly working to prevent our enemies from arming themselves with advanced weaponry. Our red lines are as sharp as ever and our determination to enforce them is stronger than ever.”

IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot said earlier this month that Israel has conducted 200 attacks in the last year targeting advanced weapon systems and infrastructure sites in Syria belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps.
