Israeli man killed in stabbing attack in Gush Etzion

An Israeli man died yesterday after being stabbed in the back by a 16-year-old Palestinian outside a shopping mall near the Gush Etzion Junction in the West Bank.

Ari Fuld, 45, a father of four and also a US citizen, lived in the settlement of Efrat. Fuld was a well known social and news media commentator. The assailant was identified as Khalil Jabarin from Yatta, a village south of Hebron. He was shot by Fuld and another civilian at the scene and moderately wounded.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) raided Jabarin’s home this morning to question family members and prepare his house for demolition. Jabarin apparently skipped school and didn’t return home, prompting his mother to suspect that he was going to commit a terror attack. She told the local IDF checkpoint near her home to warn them.

Thousands of people attended Fuld’s funeral late last night, including Education Minister Naftali Bennett and US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met with former Israeli politicians last night, including Yossi Beilin, who said that Abbas told the delegation he condemns violence, in which “everybody loses,” and that he only supports peaceful protests.

Hamas said in a statement that they welcomed the stabbing attack, adding: “Our people wish to continue the Jerusalem intifada. To resist the occupation, by using all means necessary, is our legitimate right.”

On Friday, approximately 13,000 demonstrators gathered along the security fence in the Gaza Strip. The protestors burnt tyres, threw rocks and firebombs at IDF troops and the security fence, and threw two grenades at a military vehicle in the northern Gaza Strip. IDF troops also spotted nine Palestinians crossing the security fence in the southern Gaza Strip but they returned shortly afterwards. According Palestinian sources, three Palestinians were killed from live IDF fire. The IDF said its troops responded with riot dispersal means and operated in accordance with the standard operating procedures.
