All papers continue to report on the situation of violence in Lebanon with ongoing clashes between Hezbollah fighters and the Lebanese army. In the latest developments, the Guardian notes that Hezbollah took over a strategically located mountain-top village south east of Beirut that could be used in confrontations with Israel. Reuters reports that the Lebanese army began taking measures today to stop gunmen and the illegal carrying of weapons in a clampdown across the country. BBC Online notes that the US has offered to strengthen the Lebanese army in order for it to disarm Hezbollah. In other news, the Independent, Scotsman and BBC Online note that a seventy-five-year-old Israeli woman was killed yesterday in a rocket attack which struck a house in Moshav Yesha, east of Gaza. BBC Online reports that Israel has resumed the supply of fuel to Gaza. The Guardian carries a piece by former Haaretz editor, David Landau, on Israel's political make up as the country marks its sixtieth year of independence. The Daily Telegraph notes that ahead of his arrival in Israel to mark the country's 60th anniversary, US President George W. Bush has called Prime Minister Ehud Olmert an "honest man" despite a new investigation over the prime minister's alleged use of illegal funding.
In the Israel press, all papers note that a seventy-five-year-old woman was killed yesterday in a Qassam rocket strike on Moshav Yesha, east of Gaza. Several papers also report on the meetings yesterday between Israeli leaders and Egyptian Intelligence Chief Omar Suleiman over the Gaza ceasefire proposal. On the Israeli side, all leaders emphasised the importance of the release of captured IDF soldier Gilad Shalit as part of the ceasefire deal. Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post note that US President Bush spoke to a group of Israeli journalists yesterday in the White House ahead of his arrival to Israel today. President Bush told the journalists that PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is a viable partner for peace in order to create a Palestinian democratic state. He also added that he was very concerned over Iran's nuclear plans that must be halted through diplomatic means.
