Kadima members elect the next party leader

In the UK and international media today, most papers note that Hamas security forces clashed with the Dogmush clan in Gaza yesterday, which left 12 people dead, including a baby boy. The Times, BBC Online and Financial Times note that the Kadima party today will hold its primary elections to elect a new leader. Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni leads the polls as favourite. BBC Online and Reuters report that outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met yesterday with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and vowed to continue talks to progress the peace process.

In the Israeli press, all papers note that the Kadima party will hold its first ever primary elections today and vote on a new leader. Approximately 73,000 Kadima members are registered with the voter turnout expected to be around 50 percent. In other news, the papers note that the International Atomic Energy Agency yesterday revealed documents and photos during a presentation to its board on efforts by Iran to modify a missile clone in order to fit a nuclear warhead. All papers report that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas yesterday to discuss the core peace issues as part of the plan to reach a peace agreement by the end of the year. In addition, the papers note that 11 Palestinians were killed in Gaza yesterday when Hamas forces clashed with a criminal gang. Haaretz and Ynetnews note that Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has referred to remarks made by Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad against Israel as "lunacy". Haaretz reports that Syrian sources have said that they believe indirect talks between Syria and Israel will be postponed due to the Israeli political situation, while the Jerusalem Post notes that Assad in a television interview yesterday said that Damascus would not cut any ties with Tehran.
