Western powers impose new sanctions on Iran

The announcement of new sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme is the main item of Israel-related coverage in the UK media today. The Financial Times notes that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recently announced his county's ‘victory' as it withstands western sanctions. In other news, the Guardian notes Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's criticism of ongoing Israeli construction in settlements. Reuters notes that Israel appears unconcerned over Secretary Rice's remarks. The Times notes possible plans for a ‘historic meeting' between PM Olmert and Syrian President Bashar Assad at the upcoming Mediterranean Union summit in France.  BBC Online, meanwhile, has pieces on rumours of an imminent prisoner exchange between Israel and Hezbollah, the talks between Israel and Syria, and the three Islamic Jihad gunmen killed in Gaza yesterday.

In the Israeli media, the Jerusalem Post notes a significant upgrade in relations between Israel and the EU announced yesterday. Haaretz follows reports of a possibly imminent prisoner exchange between Israel and Hezbollah. Haaretz also quotes remarks by UN Special Envoy Terje Roed-Larsen which were critical of Israel's decision to open talks with Syria, and quotes remarks by a US official that the situation in the West Bank remains unchanged despite the lifting of some roadblocks by Israel. The Jerusalem Post, meanwhile, has additional pieces on the Israeli-Syrian talks, and Prime Minister Olmert's hopes to continue leading the Kadima party despite the ongoing investigations against him. Ynetnews notes that a senior Hamas delegation has left Cairo without a finalisation of the ceasefire with Israel.
