Twenty-seven foreign ministers of the European Union yesterday voted unanimously to upgrade diplomatic relations with Israel, despite efforts by the Palestinian Authority and Egypt to prevent the decision. The discussions over the upgrade in status took place over an 18-month period with constant efforts by the PA, Egypt and other Arab countries who lobbied against it. Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, who had been lobbying the EU for the last year and a half, called the decision a, "significant achievement for Israeli diplomacy, which opens up a new chapter between Israel and the countries of the EU. This new chapter faithfully reflects the strengthening cooperation between the sides based on common values and similar world views."
The first sign of acknowledgement of the improved Israel-EU relations will be when the new Israeli prime minister will meet with leaders of the EU member states in Brussels in April. In addition, Israel's foreign minister will meet three times a year with the 27 EU foreign ministers. Israel and the EU will also conduct strategic dialogue on issues facing the region such as the peace process, the threat of Iran, counter-terrorism measures and organised crime. The EU will also assist Israel in integration into UN agencies and will promote the idea to include Israeli specialists in EU peacekeeping forces.
