The Knesset will open today for its winter session in a special meeting that will include speeches by Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik, President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu. President Peres is expected to focus his speech on the threat of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his recent anti-Israel remarks at the UN General Assembly. Peres will also speak about oil rich Gulf States that contribute towards terrorism. In addition, the president will focus his address on the issue of global warming
In related news, the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee will this morning be briefed by former IDF Chief of Staff Amnon Lipkin-Shahak who is responsible for the implementation of the recommendations made by the Winograd Committee's inquiry into last year's Second Lebanon War. Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry is expected to submit the 2008 State Budget to the Knesset today and Finance Minister Ronnie Bar-On is scheduled to present the Budget Law to the plenum for its first reading in two weeks time.
