Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his cabinet during the weekly meeting yesterday that Israel aspires towards peace with Syria and all it neighbours. Netanyahu's comments were aimed at calming the barbed exchange of messages over the past week between Israeli and Syrian ministers. "Israel aspires to reach peace with all its neighbours," Netanyahu said. "We did so with Egypt and Jordan and we aspire to do so with Syria and the Palestinians." The prime minister said that Israel will hold negotiations with Syria without preconditions and noted that Israel will refuse to enter negotiations with any predetermined decisions.
PM Netanyahu attempted to calm the diplomatic situation between Israel and Syria following comments last week by the Israeli and Syrian foreign ministers. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem said last week that an Israeli attack on Syria would result in all-out war and the Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman responded by saying that the next war would result in the toppling of Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.
