An opinion poll commissioned by the Haaretz newspaper to assess the current levels of popularity of Prime Minister Netanyahu's government has found that the prime minister's personal rating among the public is generally favorable. The public view of the government as a whole, however, was less positive. It found that 52% of the public consider Netanyahu to be better suited than opposition leader Tzipi Livni to be prime minister. Only 34% answered in favour of Livni. The Cabinet, however, was given only 5.6 out of 10 by the respondents to the poll in assessing its effectiveness. An interesting additional statistic revealed by the poll was a fairly even split among the public regarding the central issue of a settlement freeze and relations with the US. The poll found that 46% of the public consider that Israel should continue building in the West Bank even if this causes confrontation with the US, while 44% thought that it should not.
