Peres requests meeting with Obama to restart peace talks

According to a report in Haaretz, Israeli President Shimon Peres has requested a meeting with US President Barack Obama in the upcoming months to discuss restarting the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians. Recently, Peres has expressed his concern over the lack of progress in the peace process. During a visit to Spain two weeks ago, Peres said that the turmoil and protest in the Arab world make it more crucial for peace talks to resume. Peres’ spokesperson said that the president will travel to Geneva in late March and then to London with the possibility of travelling to Washington or New York afterwards. “We are in the early stages of talks with the American administration,” the spokesperson said.

As foreign minister in Ariel Sharon’s government eight years ago, Peres proposed the idea of a Palestinian state in provisional borders combined with accelerated talks to reach a final status agreement based on the 1967 borders. Peres reached an understanding on this proposal with the head of the Palestinian negotiation team at the time, Ahmed Qureia.
