PM Cameron reiterates support for Israel

[ssba]

British Prime Minister David Cameron, in an interview with the Anglo-Jewish newspaper Jewish News, yesterday confirmed his stance of strong support for Israel, adding that he greatly values the ‘longstanding friendship’ between the two countries. In a wide-ranging interview, Cameron reiterated British opposition to recognition of a unilaterally declared Palestinian state. He restated Britain’s support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and his government’s determination to help get the peace process ‘back on track.’ Cameron also noted the ‘absolutely appalling’ fact that Gilad Shalit is still being held, and demanded the unconditional release of the kidnapped IDF soldier. He said that he had been very clear in his condemnation of Hamas. Cameron’s remarks follow a series of incidents that have raised concern in Jerusalem. Earlier in the week during PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s trip to Britain the Foreign Secretary upgraded Palestinian representation in London. In addition, last month the UK supported a proposed UN Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

Cameron, in his interview with Jewish News, also noted Iran’s threats not to attend the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games, which are to be held in London. He said that athletes not willing to compete against Israelis would not be welcome at the games.
