At least 10 people were killed yesterday as Syrian security forces attacked the al-Omari mosque in the southern Syrian city of Daraa in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The city has become the focal point for protests against the regime of President Bashar Assad. Protestors are calling for the scrapping of emergency laws that have been in in place since 1963 and the release of all political prisoners. After the mosque attack, Syrian forces also fired live ammunition at crowds of demonstrators seeking to enter Daraa from surrounding villages. Four more people were reported to have been killed, bringing the death toll in Daraa in recent days to 14. The funerals of two people killed at the al-Omari mosque took place yesterday. According to eyewitnesses, sections of the crowd for the first time began to chant slogans against Iran and Hezbollah, and the alliance of the regime with them.
