US planning strategy to end consideration of Goldstone Report by UN
The United States is currently consulting with allies to develop a strategy to end any further consideration by the United Nations of the Goldstone Report which investigated Operation Cast Lead in Gaza in 2008/9. The US has from the outset opposed the claims in the report that Israel deliberately targeted civilians during the course of the operation, but Judge Richard Goldstone’s recent statements reconsidering this claim have added momentum to US efforts to secure the effective shelving of the report, according to an article in today’s Jerusalem Post.
The US is also discussing ways to halt follow-up moves based on the report currently under consideration in the UN Security Council. Speaking to the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice noted that “The United States every day stands firmly and unequivocally in support of our ally Israel in the United Nations, where as we all know it often comes under illegitimate and unfair attacks simply for existing.”
