US and Saudi Arabia agree massive defence deal

The US and Saudi Arabia have agreed a defence package worth US$110bn.

According to the US State Department: “This package of defence equipment and services supports the long-term security of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region in the face of malign Iranian influence and Iranian related threats.”

The State Department also cited the goal of enhancing the Saudi Arabian contribution to regional counterrorism operations, and reducing the burden on US forces in the region.

The deal, signed during President Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia last week, contains commitments to augment Saudi Arabia’s defence capabilities in five key areas: border security and counterterrorism, maritime and coastal security, air force modernization, air and missile defence, and cybersecurity and communications upgrades. Offers are also included for extensive training and support to strengthen partnership and the Saudi armed forces.

Some commentators in Israel have expressed concern that the deal may erode Israel’s long held qualitative military edge over Arab states.

Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz has said the deal is a cause for concern for Israel. He said: “We have also to make sure that those hundreds of billions of dollars of weapons to Saudi Arabia will not, by any means, erode Israel’s qualitative edge.”

However, others have pointed out that the US remains committed to maintaining Israel’s military advantage.  Former Israeli National Security Adviser Maj. Gen. Amidror said that the deal “does not change the balance in the Middle East” and that the US “is very sensitive about keeping Israel’s military edge”, and cited the recent acquisition of the F-35 jet as evidence.

US officials are said to understand Israeli concerns and are expected to ensure Israel maintains its military advantage. A US official told Reuters: “We’re taking a whole bunch of measures… to ensure Israel’s qualitative military edge. That will in no way be compromised.”

The official added that a strong statement on the commitment of the US to Israel’s defence can be expected from President Trump soon.
