BICOM Expert View: What happened to the Israel-Turkey reconciliation?

[ssba]

Several months after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologised to Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayep Erdogan over the Mavi Marmara incident, the deal to restore relations is stuck, and Israelis increasingly feel Turkey has not lived up to its side of the bargain.

Netanyahu’s apology was supposed to be the first phase, followed by an agreement including Turkish commitments to prevent prosecutions against Israelis. Erdogan, however, facing domestic unrest and an upcoming election, appears in no hurry to conclude the deal.

In this BICOM Expert View paper, BICOM Senior Visiting Fellow Brig. Gen. (ret.) Michael Herzog explores the deeper reasons for breakdown in relations, examines the costs to Turkey, Israel and the West of the impasse, and calls for greater efforts by Western powers to get the issue resolved.
