Briefing | Netanyahu in London

[ssba]

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is visiting Germany, France and the UK this week. Netanyahu will arrive in London on Wednesday to hold talks with UK Prime Minister Theresa May and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, after meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday and Tuesday.

These meetings will focus on Iran, with Netanyahu emphasising that he plans to discuss “the Iranian nuclear program” and “stopping Iran’s entrenchment in Syria”.

During his visit to the UK, Netanyahu will be pressed about Gaza and Israel’s military tactics along the border, where the UK has called for an independent investigation into Israeli actions in response to recent rioting.

The visit is yet another example of Israel’s strengthening ties with the UK, with bilateral relations growing stronger, especially in the area of trade, in the run-up to Brexit.

This briefing examines the overall context of Netanyahu’s visit to the UK as well as the key arguments behind the issues to be discussed.
