Haaretz: Ten pieces of advice for Lapid, by Ophir Pines-Paz

“This is Yair Lapid’s big hour, following his success in becoming the public’s ultimate default choice while trouncing Netanyahu, Yacimovich and Livni. Obviously, Lapid has a future, as his party’s name claims; the question is whether we do. The coalition talks between Yesh Atid and Likud-Beiteinu can determine the character of the upcoming government and national politics. Here are a few pieces of advice that could help Lapid help us all.

1. Don’t agree to the “veto clause.” In all coalition agreements, one of the first clauses that Likud dictates is a veto clause, determining that any change in the voting system, Basic Laws or the adoption of a constitution requires the agreement of all coalition parties. If you succumb to this demand, any further advice will be superfluous. This clause eternalizes old politics that sanctify the status quo and prevent any change in the essential matters. This is a clause all religious parties demand to preserve the severe distortions you discussed throughout the election campaign.”
