Palestinian rivals set election date, fail to form interim government

In the International and UK press today, all papers report on the developments in Egypt where activists have clashed with the military over the past week. The papers note that the protesters are calling for a million man march to take place today, while in other news the papers note that state media reported that the army appointed a veteran political leader Kamal Ganzouni to lead a national salvation government. The Independent and Telegraph note that Hamas political leader Khaled Meshaal and Fatah leader and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met in Cairo yesterday and agreed to work as partners towards a Palestinian election in May. Meanwhile, the Times, Telegraph, Scotsman and Reuters note that the Arab League set a 24-hour ultimatum for Syria to accept its demands to allow observers into the country or to face sanctions.

On Israeli front pages today, all papers carry the story that PA President Mahmoud Abbas met with Hamas political leader Khaled Meshaal in Cairo yesterday and agreed to work as partners towards an election in May. The papers also report on the developments in Cairo as protests against the military rule continue. The Jerusalem Post notes that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty is in the world’s interest to maintain. The paper also reports that the Arab League has given Syria 24 hours to meet its demands of sending in observers into the country or face sanctions.

In other news, Ynetnews reports that a group of Palestinians and Iranians yesterday protested outside the synagogue in Bochum, Germany where former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert was delivering a speech. Ynetnews and Haaretz report that Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salaam Fayyad said that due to the Israeli freeze on taxes and fees the Palestinian Authority will soon be incapacitated making it hard to pay salaries and maintain infrastructures.
