In the UK and international papers today, The Telegraph, Independent and The Guardian report that the new International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report shows that Iran is nearing nuclear weapon capabilities and that the Western powers will need to determine their response to the latest report. BBC Online notes that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that imposing further sanctions on Iran or even a military strike by Western powers would be a “serious mistake”. The Times notes that Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin condemned Western powers for considering a military strike on Iran. In other news, the Financial Times carries a piece on the efforts and lobbying by the Palestinians, in their bid to receive UN membership status. BBC Online notes that an American-Israeli couple, whose son was born in Jerusalem, have taken their case to the Supreme Court over a demand that the US recognises their son’s birth country as Israel.

In the Israeli front pages, Haaretz reports that Western nuclear experts say that Iran is able to build a nuclear bomb within months. Israel Hayom also carries the Iranian nuclear developments on the front page. The Jerusalem Post reports that Israel is hoping the latest IAEA report will spur the Western powers into responding to the Iranian nuclear programme. The paper also notes that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that illegal outposts on Palestinian land in the West Bank should be dismantled, while settlement blocs should be strengthened.

In other news, the papers note that the US renewed financial aid to the Palestinians and released $200 million (£125 million) in security funding. Haaretz notes that former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice said that she is sure Israel would defend itself if Iran reached nuclear capabilities.
