IAEA report says Iran working on a nuclear weapon

[ssba]

In the UK and international press today, all papers report on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report released yesterday that said the agency has serious concerns regarding possible military dimensions to Iran’s nuclear programme. The Telegraph notes that following the IAEA report military action against Tehran may take place soon. The paper notes that Defence Minister Ehud Barak said that a split in the international community over imposing sanctions against Iran could force Israel to deal with the situation and face the consequences of retaliation from Iran. In other news, a Times editorial and all other papers report that French President Nicolas Sarkozy was heard calling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “a liar” on an open microphone during a private conversation with US President Barack Obama at the G20 summit. BBC Online and Sky News notes that the United Nations say more than 3,500 Syrians have died in the crackdown by the regime on anti-government protests. The Guardian notes that former Conservative defence minister Nicholas Soames said that the UK would face severe consequences if it abstains in the vote for a Palestinian state at the UN. Meanwhile, the Telegraph and Reuters note that a UN panel could not reach a consensus on the Palestinian statehood bid, signaling the latest sign that the bid won’t be passed onto the General Assembly for a vote.

On the Israeli front pages today, Haaretz reports that Israel is not rushing to respond to the IAEA report on Iran’s nuclear weapons development and is waiting for the reaction from the international community. All papers also lead with the IAEA report on Iran’s efforts to achieve a nuclear weapon. Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post also carry pieces on the comments made by French President Sarkozy calling PM Netanyahu a “liar” that was picked up by an open microphone at the G20 summit.

In other news, Haaretz notes that relations between Turkey and Israel are showing moderate signs of improvement. The paper also notes that the Middle East Quartet will meet separately with Israeli and Palestinian officials on Monday in Jerusalem in an effort to restart the stalled peace process. The Jerusalem Post notes that President Shimon Peres yesterday held a memorial service at his residence marking 16 years (according to the Hebrew calendar) since the assassination of former-prime minister Yitzhak Rabin. The paper also notes that the Israeli Air Force targeted sites in southern Gaza overnight Tuesday in response to a Qassam rocket attack earlier in the day into southern Israel.
