In the UK and international press today, all papers continue to report on the uprisings and clashes taking place across the Middle East and North Africa, focusing on developments in Libya and Syria. Reuters reports that Syrian President Bashar Assad deployed his army in the main port of Latakia following two weeks of protests across the country. Sky News reports that US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the violence in Syria after 12 people were killed during the protests. Several papers note that the Israeli Air Force struck a Palestinian rocket firing squad in Gaza yesterday, killing two people. In other news, BBC Online reports that the Israeli Foreign Ministry are waiting for a response from the Argentinean Foreign Ministry to verify a newspaper report that Argentina proposed to Iran that it would ‘forget’ the 1992 and 1994 bombings of an Israeli embassy and a Jewish community centre in exchange for improved trade ties.

Over the weekend, all papers reported that 12 people were killed in the Syrian port city of Latakia as violence erupted between pro and anti-government protesters. The Daily Telegraph on Saturday reported that Britain and the US condemned the violence in Syria. The Sunday Times noted that Israel deployed its first battery of the Iron Dome anti-missile system on Sunday.

In the Israeli press, all papers report that Israel deployed the first battery of the Iron Dome anti-missile system yesterday. The first battery was set up near the largest southern city of Beersheba. The IDF and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that while the Iron Dome will act as a deterrent to rocket attacks, it will not provide complete protection for all southern communities in Israel. The papers note that the Israeli Foreign Ministry is waiting for a response from the Argentinean Foreign Ministry over a report that Argentina offered to freeze the investigations over the 1992 and 1994 bombings of the Israeli embassy and Jewish community centre in exchange for improved trade ties with Iran.  All papers report that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met Saturday with Hamas officials in the West Bank, in an attempt to end nearly four years of infighting. Haaretz reports that Israel and Russia signed a space agency cooperation agreement to boost space research efforts. All papers also note that gunmen in northern Sinai targeted the gas pipeline that supplies natural gas to Jordan and Israel. The attackers planted a bomb along the pipeline, which failed to detonate and was later defused by security forces.
