Knesset debate rages over boycott bill as opposition grows

BBC Online also notes an Israeli air raid on targets in Gaza, as a response to Qassam rocket fire on Tuesday. The Independent has a piece looking into the Palestinian decision to seek UN support for a unilateral declaration of statehood. The Times notes a growing row in Syria where sabotage is suspected to be behind the explosion of a pipeline earlier this week. Reuters notes the death of four civilians as the Syrian military continues to move against protesters. BBC Online has additional pieces on the removal of falafel from Mcdonalds restaurants in Israel, and the arrival home of a number of Welsh pro-Palestinian activists who took part in the flotilla. The Independent notes that an Ultra-Orthodox newspaper in Israel banned women from attending an event. The Financial Times has a piece suggesting that fear of chaos is serving to mute criticism of the Assad regime. The Financial Times and Daily Telegraph note also Arab criticism of US statements that President Bashar Assad is losing his legitimacy. The Financial Times also notes a domestic and international backlash against Israel’s new boycott law. The Evening Standard notes the explosion of a gas pipeline in Syria. The Daily Telegraph reports that Iran is to shift its nuclear enrichment programme to an underground bunker to safeguard it from the threat of attack. The Daily Telegraph also has an online only piece critical of the new boycott law in Israel.

In the Israeli media, the print editions of Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post lead with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s expression of approval for the boycott law. Ynetnews and Maariv also note this. Haaretz website reports that a group of law professors are organising a petition against the new law. The Jerusalem Post has a piece quoting a spokesman for European Union Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton who expressed concern at the possible implications of the new law for freedom of speech in Israel. The paper also notes that the IDF is beginning an investigation into the death of a Palestinian in an IDF raid earlier this week. Haaretz has an additional article on an IAF raid on Gaza tunnels this morning.
