The killing by Israel of an Islamic Jihad operative in an airstrike yesterday is the main item of Israel-related coverage in the UK media today. The Independent, Reuters, BBC Online and Sky News Online all have coverage of this latest development. In other items, the Guardian and Daily Telegraph report on a rally in Jerusalem yesterday held by Glenn Beck, a right wing US radio show host. The Guardian has an additional arguing that aid is not sufficient to help Palestinians, who need a political solution. The paper also focuses on an Israeli who made a popular spoof video of Colonel Gaddhafi. The Independent notes that new EU sanctions against Syria are to target the Iranian Qods Force, which has been aiding the Assad regime. The Financial Times and Scotsman note EU plans for sanctions against Syrian oil exports. The Scotsman has a piece on revelations of North Korean trade with Iran. Reuters reports on difficulties in uniting the Syrian opposition. BBC Online has a piece focusing on the arrest in Ukraine of a Palestinian suspected of involvement in Hamas’s rocket and missile programme. The Independent quotes from a Haaretz opinion piece on Israel’s attitude toward Hamas. The piece states that the Hamas rule in Gaza provides Israel with an excuse for failing to make progress in the peace process. The Daily Telegraph has a piece on the Arab Spring and the prospects for democracy in Libya and Syria. The paper also notes that Gulfsands Petroleum has suspended its dealings with Rami Makhlouf, a close relation of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. The Independent notes the company’s earlier attempts to defend its links to Makhlouf.

Haaretz has a piece on Palestinian doubts regarding the identity of the terrorists who carried out the Eilat attack. The Jerusalem Post notes the Israeli Security Cabinet’s attempts to develop a strategy for responding to a Palestinian unilateral declaration of independence.
