Two-state solution reaffirmed by Netanyahu in Obama meeting

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed his commitment to a two-state solution at a meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House yesterday. Speaking to the press alongside Obama, he said, “I remain committed to a vision of peace of two states for two peoples, based on mutual recognition and rock-solid security arrangements on the ground. And I believe we should make use of the new opportunities, think outside the box, see how we can recruit the Arab countries to advance this very hopeful agenda.”

Netanyahu’s comments echoed his remarks about a regional solution in his speech to the United Nations General Assembly earlier this week. He also praised Mr Obama’s leadership in tackling ISIS.

The meeting between the two leaders also discussed their differing positions on Iran’s nuclear programme. Israeli sources briefed that the meeting was “positive and deep”.

Mr Netanyahu’s comments about a two-state solution provoked criticism from Naftali Bennett, his coalition partner from the Jewish Home party, who posted a short Facebook response: “Not happening”.
