US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said yesterday that the United Nations Human Rights Council must abandon its bias against Israel. “The structural bias against Israel, including a standing agenda item [on Israel], is wrong and it undermines the important work that we are trying to do together as member states,” Clinton said. Speaking at the opening of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, she said that the council must apply single standards to all countries based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and should not continue to devote so much of its time towards Israel. In the last five years, the council has issued 51 condemnations against countries, with 35 of them against Israel.
