Dan Shapiro set to be nominated as next US ambassador to Israel

Senior White House advisor Dan Shapiro is expected to be nominated as the next US Ambassador to Israel according to sources in Washington. Shapiro worked with US President Barack Obama during his presidential campaign and advised him on all Middle Eastern issues. Shapiro speaks fluent Hebrew and currently serves as the senior director for Middle East and North Africa issues on the National Security Council.

In the past, Shapiro attended all meetings relates to Israel or the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and accompanied Middle East envoy George Mitchell on all his trips to the Middle East. Shapiro holds strong relations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his close advisors and has often met with other senior Israeli politicians including the opposition. The current ambassador’s post will be vacated by James Cunningham who is expected to end his three year team in the summer.
