FM Lieberman arriving in UK today

[ssba]

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman will arrive in the UK for an official visit today. Whilst in London, Lieberman will meet his British counterpart Foreign Secretary William Hague, National Security Adviser Peter Ricketts, and members of the parliament’s foreign affairs committee. Lieberman is expected to ask his British counterparts to expedite proposed legislation to prevent the misuse of universal jurisdiction laws to trigger arrest warrants against Israeli leaders.

It was reported yesterday in Ha’aretz that the Israeli Foreign Minister has drafted a map of a Palestinian state in provisional borders. The plan would essentially “freeze the existing situation in the territories, with minor changes,” according to a source from the Israeli foreign ministry. The purpose of such a map, according to the senior foreign ministry official, is to show that Israel is genuinely interested in progress toward peace. Lieberman also indicated in an interview with Ha’aretz that Israel must take the diplomatic initiative by proposing a Palestinian state in provisional borders. Commenting on Lieberman’s proposal, Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told Army Radio that it was an “invention and a joke.” He referred to recent comments by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who warned of the possibility of another Intifada if the deadlock in peace talks continued.
