Rockets fired from Gaza strike Ashkelon region

[ssba]

Three rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip by Palestinian terrorist organisations yesterday. The rocket attacks mark the continuation of escalating tension in the Gaza area that has taken place over the last week. Two of the rockets landed in the southern industrial zone of Ashkelon. A third landed in the Ashkelon Beach area. The rocket fire followed a raid earlier Monday by Israeli aircraft on what the IDF Spokesperson described as ‘terror sites’ in the northern and southern parts of the Gaza Strip.

Hamas, which effectively controls the Gaza Strip, are currently engaged in talks with other factions, in order to persuade them to cease the rocket fire. Hamas wishes to prevent a major Israeli incursion into Gaza. Small factions within the strip are using attacks against Israel as part of an internal political struggle and in an effort to garner political support in the Palestinian street. Islamic Jihad have claimed responsibility for a number of the recent rocket attacks, including an incident over the weekend in which three foreign workers employed at a border kibbutz were injured.
