The first part of the Turkel Committee report, issued Sunday, has concluded that Israel’s blockade of Gaza, and its actions to stop the May 2010 Gaza flotilla from reaching Gaza, were lawful. The Turkel Committee is an in independent Israeli inquiry established after nine Turkish activists aboard the Mavi Marmara ship were killed when Israeli naval commandos took over the vessel. The Committee, chaired by retired Israeli judge Jacob Turkel, includes two international observers, Lord David Trimble and Canadian Brigadier General (Ret) Kenneth Watkin. The observers described the inquiry as independent and rigorous. The Committee is yet to report on the question of whether Israel’s systems for investigating accusations of war crimes meet with its international obligations. To read the report click here.
